Tensions over slavery dated back to the American Revolution of 1776, which resulted in a republic that was simultaneously committed to freedom for whites and bondage for blacks. By 1860, these tensions had become so polarized along sectional lines that the North and South lacked any common ground on which to compromise on the issue.
The American Revolution produced both the world’s leading model of political democracy and one of its greatest slaveholding powers. Freedom for whites existed side by side with enslavement for African Americans. The U.S. Constitution, crafted at Philadelphia in 1787, also embodied this profound paradox when it recognized the right of a state to regulate slavery within its boundaries.
